Final Research Report

Jan 2017 update: A Statesman reporter made available a final research report from UT.

According to the undated report, there was a slight decrease in violent crime in the grant area over the grant period, and no change in property crime. No findings connect the decrease to grant activities rather than other interventions during 2012-16.

Extension of research contract with UT

City Council voted to extend the interlocal agreement with UT through September 30, 2016. According to the extended agreement, “the grant requires a partnership between the City and a research partner for the duration of the grant period to complete research and evaluation components … the City and the University desire to complete the research and evaluation components as outlined in both the City’s approved grant proposal and an implementation plan”.

Councilman Casar:

… I believe the investigator’s intent is to continue and complete the report being done at the university of Texas. And we — the U.T. and my office — worked with some folks to bring people together to talk about the final study and I think that there certainly are people all over the spectrum on how they feel about how the process has gone. But I do think that in the end it benefits us to keep this relationship going with the university formally through an interlocal, and then people will agree or disagree on how valid the data is, what the results are, but this study combined with the community policing report that we budgeted this last cycle will give a lot to talk about when it comes to community policing and the way we think about and practice policing in our community. So those are difficult conversations and I hear some folks that are very, very excited about the way some parts of the program have gone and others that have serious criticism and I think that contention is natural and I look forward to the report that we get so we can have sort of more material to agree or disagree about and look at the data that’s presented to the university.
